How to clean up your Facebook newsfeed without unfollowing and unfriending

Lately my Facebook friends have been dropping like flies. I hear them say: “There are too many political posts!” “All anyone posts are memes.” “I get tired of arguing.”

I feel you, but I promise there is a better way. Best of all, you don’t have to unfollow or unfriend your favorite aunt because all she posts are Minion memes (what’s up with those anyway?).

The trick is to unfollow the pages that they share. That way you’ll still see their real status updates and photos but not so many of the things you’re not interested in.

Here’s how:

Step 1. Let’s say my friend shared this image and I don’t want to see these types of posts. I’ll click the little down arrow in the top right of the post (this exists on mobile too) to get options.

In reality, I think this is adorable and wouldn’t unfollow. Sorry you’re my example, Daniel!

Step 2. From the dropdown, select “Hide all from <whatever page>.”

That’s it! The post will disappear and you won’t see any other posts from that page, no matter who shares it. It takes a bit of time and cultivation, but it’s cleaned up my newsfeed a ton. For example, I’ve unfollowed just about every political page and I rarely see those posts anymore.

Plus, if you make a mistake, you’ll get an instant chance to “undo”:

I hope this helped! Let me know if you have any questions in the comments.

How to make the perfect Craigslist ad

I suck at Craigslist. I’m not proud of it. As a marketer, it’s always been a sore spot. I mean, I’ve sold things here and there but it’s never been quick and it’s come with a fair amount of drama.

I think part of the problem is Craigslist is kind of hard to take seriously. Between the obvious scam artists:

Oh, I only have to send you all of my personal information and you’ll send me the full amount of money plus $50? Golly gee, what a deal!

To the unspeakable sections like “Casual Encounters” and “Missed Connections.” Then there’s just good ol’ fashioned terrible grammar, spelling and photos all over the place.

Back to my dilemma. I had a new bedroom set coming in a couple of weeks and had to get rid of my current set. The old girl had gotten me through college and two moves, but it was time to say goodbye. I’ll be honest though, after cleaning out all of the drawers and giving it a good cleaning, I just wanted to be done with it. So I hastily took some photos (at night) and slapped together a quick post with all the details I thought someone buying a bedroom set might want. This was the result:

And then I waited… and renewed the ad… and waited… I lowered the price from $400 to $300… then waited. My inbox was basically crickets. I received one offer but didn’t hear back after responding. (Side note: Can we agree as a people to not do this? If you’re no longer interested, just let the person know! Don’t be a jerk.)

In frustration, I asked for advice from my boss who has successfully sold a lot o’ junk high quality items on the CL. She gave me some simple tips that got my stuff sold.

It boiled down to this:

Nerd levels rising: my first cosplay

I successfully created my first cosplay and debuted it for Halloween this year. It’s a female version of the 11th Doctor from Doctor Who:

amberfemme11

For reference, here’s what the character looks like:

11thdoctor

It all started when I found the jacket at a Goodwill. It may not be easy to tell from the photo but it’s basically spot on, right down to the red lines in the plaid design. I then ordered the Sonic Screwdriver from Hot Topic on sale, the white button-up blouse and black skirt came from Old Navy, the hose from Walmart, and ordered the bow tie and suspenders from Amazon. I already had the booties, which worked out perfectly. I finished it all off with TARDIS earrings from Hot Topic (you can’t tell from the photo unfortunately).

Overall, I’m really happy with how it came together. I’ll be wearing it again to the 50th Anniversary episode: The Day of the Doctor in theaters. I’m hoping I won’t be the only one dressed up. :)

Bonus, my Pokemon pumpkin carving:

Spoiler alert! Not cool, The Walking Dead Facebook page. Not cool.

One of my biggest pet peeves is spoilers.  I’m the kind of person who even avoids watching too many trailers.  I hate trailers that are long and give too much away.  After watching the initial trailer for something I want to see, I’ll usually avoid the rest.  There’s nothing like watching a movie or TV show and discovering things along with the characters in front of you.  It makes you a part of the story.  So when something crucial is spoiled, you lose that moment.  It possibly ruins the whole episode or movie.

There’s obviously a time period for any medium when you’ll just have to accept that people will talk about something.  I mean if you get mad that someone spoils the end of The Sixth Sense for you by now, you need to get over it.  But I do think that time period for talking spoilers is now much later than what it used to be.  Back in the day, if you missed an episode you were out of luck unless you had a friend record it for you or you caught a special rerun weeks later.  With the Internet and DVRs today, people aren’t beholden to cable providers’ schedules.  People set their DVRs to automatically record their favorite shows, watch them online a few days or weeks after premiering on TV or even wait until an entire season comes to Netflix.

We completely cut cable two years ago and it was the best decision we ever made.  We save hundreds of dollars a year and are perfectly content with catching up on older shows and movies on Netflix and streaming newer shows online when necessary.  No regrets!

One of our current favorite shows (along with half of the country) is The Walking Dead.  We watched Season 1 on Netflix and have watched Season 2 and now Season 3 on AMC’s website.  AMC streams each episode on their website two days after it shows on TV.  If you watched last Sunday’s episode you’ll know it was a doozie.  So, I’d love to know why the official The Walking Dead Facebook page thought it was a great idea to post its biggest spoiler on that day!

I’m going to link to a screenshot to show what I’m talking about after the break.  You are being warned.  If you are not caught up to episode 303 of The Walking Dead, then do not click that link.

YouTubesday: The Oregon Duck – Gangnam Style Parody

Unless you’ve been hiding out in the mountains for the past few weeks, you’ve probably seen the Gangnam Style video and been aware of the start of college football season (the best season of them all). This Gangnam Style tribute by the University of Oregon fuses the two into a beautiful marriage of Koreany-mascoty fun.

All I gotta say is Mizzou needs to step it up, because right now we’ve only got terribly embarrassing music videos made by students.

FYI the Internet is pretty cool

I was passed along this infographic that really puts the power of people using the Internet into perspective. Though the Internet is home to some weird stuff, as some of my previous posts have lovingly pointed out, it’s an incredible invention and the world is a better place for it. I love having a constant stream of information at my fingertips at all times. I am never limited on the things I can learn and see and let’s hope it stays that way. I love that it has made citizens into journalists and gives the little guy a place to speak out and make a difference.

Anyway, I’ll quit waxing poetic and let you read for yourself!
