Gettin’ down on the FarmVille

Posted by Amber  Published in Facebook, gaming, internet

I love FarmVille. The first step is admitting it.
If you don’t know, FarmVille is an application game by Zynga on Facebook. The goal of the game is to manage a virtual farm by planting crops and orchards, raising animals and harvesting/collecting the fruits of your labors. As you play, you gain both gold and experience [...]

99 DARPA balloons for the Internet’s birthday

Posted by Amber  Published in Twitter, Uncategorized, internet

Did you know DARPA is still around? You know, those guys that basically invented the Internet (hint: not Al Gore). I always assumed it was sort of absorbed by other government agencies/bureaucracies but apparently they are alive and kicking. Sadly, their Web site is a little boring and unimpressive, but that’s beside the point.
I only [...]

Life Update

Posted by Amber  Published in college, internet, journalism, mizzou

This post is going to be a bit of a life update since I have neglected my blog for so long, but do not stress for it will also directly relate to the Internet.
I haven’t updated my blog since April because May became quite hectic for me.
I graduated.

My family came to visit.

And I got a [...]

To TV or not to TV?

Posted by Amber  Published in TV, internet

So it seems like people are abandoning their TVs. I can’t count the number of times I’ve tried to complain about a commercial or missing my favorite show when I am reminded how out of fashion I am. Who watches TV anyway? Well, at least, on a TV. Yesterday, a guy in one of my [...]

Government priorities — the Rickroll?

Posted by Amber  Published in internet

You know an Internet meme has come full circle when the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is using it or, as I suspect, one of her interns.
What am I talking about? Feast your eyes on:
Just some cats around the capital, oh wait what’s happening to the music? A familiar 80s tune appears, this [...]

Anonymous

Posted by Amber  Published in anonymous

You may or may not have heard of the “group” Anonymous, recently. Chances are, if you have only recently heard of them it was from some media outlet. I have been curiously following them and their antics for the last couple of years, and one thing that constantly bothers me is the media’s complete ignorance [...]

Thumbs up/Thumbs down: Silencing Thought?

Posted by Amber  Published in conversation, internet

I’ve been thinking about comment ratings. It seems most Web sites now have some sort of ability for people to rate (+/-, thumbs up/thumbs down) people’s comments. I think it was originally created as a way for users to self-police their communities. It’s nice to not have to read spam and incredibly offensive diatribes that [...]

Word Gets Around

Posted by Amber  Published in consumers, email

Word definitely gets around these days. I was intrigued as I followed an interesting story that came up on the local Craigslist Rants & Raves Web site. When people aren’t bickering and racial profiling, sometimes some interesting conversation comes up.
It all started when one poster pasted a forward he/she had received, on to the board:
“Just [...]

“Hello world!” and other such cliches.

Posted by Amber  Published in introduction, journalism

To Blog
I have had a number of these little online journals in the past. I’ve tried LiveJournal, Xanga, and Blogger several times. Many web sites incorporate their own blogging functions including MySpace and Facebook. In the past, I have used blogs to stay in touch with friends far away. I have also used blogs as [...]
